Chun a winner at Canada Cup
Hawaii native Clarissa Chun was one of three U.S. women's wrestling team members to win a gold medal at the Canada Cup held on Saturday.
Chun, of Kapolei, won the 48 kilogram (105.5 pounds) category by pinning Canada's Lindsay Rushton in the finals.
Chun finished fifth at the 2008 Olympics.
Punahou rated No. 1 again by SI
Punahou is doing something right.
For the second straight year, the private high school was named the nation's top prep sports program by Sports Illustrated.
The magazine announced the award yesterday on its Web site, stating:
In his 11 years as athletic director at the Honolulu's Punahou School Tom Holden never decorated his school's gym walls or outfield fences with championship banners. State titles, of which there have been 61 over the last four years, hold a place in Buff 'n Blue lore, but that's in the trophy case. “;We just congratulate among ourselves,”; said Holden, who retired last Thursday. “;Nothing public.”;
Punahou won 19 state titles last year, including football for the first time. Top prep player Manti Te'o was the face of the program. Jesuit in Portland, Ore., came in second in the magazine's rankings.
3 teams win in collegiate play
The Waikiki Surfers, Oahu Paddlers and Kauai Menehune were winners yesterday in Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League action.
The Surfers survived a 9-7 slugfest with the Kamuela Paniolos, while the Menehune edged the North Shore Waves 4-3, and the Paddlers triumphed 3-1 over the Hawaii Alii.
Ashton Kent, Kyle Klein and Michael Green paced the Surfers with two hits apiece, while Frank McFarland drove in three runs.
Erik Wallace was strong on the mound for the Menehune, with 12 strikeouts in six innings while yielding only two earned runs.
Anthony Melendez drew the game-winning, bases-loaded walk for the Menehune in the bottom of the ninth. Kenny Bartz and Mike Cole added two hits each.
Walter Marciel was superb in picking up the win for the Paddlers; he gave up just one hit in six innings and struck out five.
Jordan Poirrier went 3-for-4 to lead Oahu offensively, while Scott Gottschling scored twice.
