2 Maui teens perish in crash

Two Wailuku teenagers died yesterday in a crash on Kula Highway, police said.

Killed were Laula Wallace, 19, and Kai'o Fukushima, 16, both rear-seat passengers in a car headed north carrying five people.

At about 1:27 a.m., just north of Noholoa Street in Kula, the 23-year-old Wailuku man driving the car lost control, hit the guardrail, crossed the center line and crashed into the guardrail on the opposite side of the highway, Maui police said.

Four people were ejected. Police said it appears they were not wearing seat belts.

Wallace died shortly after the crash, while Fukushima died at Maui Memorial Medical Center, police said.

The conditions of the other occupants of the car were not released.

Maui County has recorded 10 traffic deaths so far this year, compared with 12 at the same time in 2008.

Kauai crash injures 2 teens

Two teens were airlifted to Oahu for treatment yesterday after they were injured in an accident on Kauai.

The teens were in a truck that ran off Hulemalu Road in Puhi and rolled onto its side on Saturday at about 11:40 p.m., a Kauai County news release said.

Eight teenagers were riding in the truck.

A girl, 14, and a boy, 13, were thrown from the cab of the truck and sustained serious injuries. They were taken to Wilcox Hospital and flown later to the Queen's Medical Center for further treatment.

Four teens in the bed of the truck were also ejected. One of them sustained minor injuries.

Two boys, the 17-year-old driver and a 14-year-old passenger in the cab, were not injured.
