Speed investigated as factor in crash with critical injury

Police are investigating whether excessive speed was a factor in a single-vehicle crash yesterday that closed an H-3 freeway tunnel and critically injured a 28-year-old woman.

The accident occurred in the Kaneohe-bound lanes of the Tetsuo Harano Tunnels shortly before 5 p.m.

Honolulu police Maj. Clayton Kau said a Ford sport utility vehicle veered off the right lane and hit the wall 955 feet from the entrance, flipping onto the driver's side before stopping 100 yards later. The woman was partially ejected and taken to the hospital with critical injuries, Kau said.

No one else was in the vehicle.

The Kaneohe-bound lanes were closed from the Moanalua Road onramp. Police reopened the freeway about three hours later.

Man allegedly takes camera of woman videotaping fight

Police arrested a 27-year-old man yesterday who allegedly grabbed a camera from a 23-year-old woman who was taking video of a large fight in the Pearlridge area Wednesday.

The man saw the woman taking video and asked her to stop, police said.

A struggle ensued, and the suspect allegedly pulled the camera from the woman's wrist and threw it onto the roof of a nearby building, police said.

The suspect was later identified and arrested for investigation of second-degree robbery.

Man accused in stabbing is charged with assault

A 19-year-old Kalihi man who allegedly knifed a 32-year-old man twice in the back was charged this week with second-degree assault instead of attempted murder.

Police had arrested Lance Cruz Moaila Monday night on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed a man who was trying to break up a fight between Moaila and his former girlfriend's new boyfriend.

Moaila was attending a party at the home of his ex-girlfriend on Mokauea Street when he got into a fight with her current boyfriend and left the party, according to a police affidavit.

His bail was set at $100,000.
