Water main break briefly closes Lusitana Street

Lusitana Street was reopened yesterday afternoon after a water main break, according to officials from the Honolulu Board of Water Supply.

The area between Auwaiolimu Street and Pauoa Road reopened at 2:30 p.m., but there was a contra-flow section to allow workers to fix broken valves.

Officials said crews expected to finish the repairs last night.

The water main break was reported at 4:30 a.m. yesterday, and several homes remained without water until last night.

Kapolei H-1 work starts first phase

Government officials and construction representatives celebrated the start yesterday of the H-1 freeway Kapolei Interchange Complex.

The $16.6 million first phase, designed to alleviate traffic in and out of Kapolei, will also include ramps connecting to the Makakilo and Palailai interchanges.

The first phase includes the building of a new eastbound H-1 freeway on- and offramp for the new Kapolei Interchange at Kamokila Boulevard and Wakea Street. It also includes a westbound freeway offramp near the Wet 'n' Wild Hawaii water park.

The new westbound onramp at the Makakilo Interchange will allow drivers to get onto the H-1 freeway from Makakilo Drive.

Latest list names 16 isle tax scofflaws

Another list shaming Hawaii's worst tax offenders into paying their taxes has been posted online by the state.

The latest account, posted last month, lists 16 individuals or companies that owe more than $100,000.

Melvyn Kanai topped the list with his debt of $557,116. That, however, was a significant drop from the top delinquent on the first list: Gary Okumura, who owed $2 million.

The first list, published in April, shamed delinquent taxpayers into making about $10,000 in payments, a state Department of Taxation news release said. The names of 34 people and five companies were on that list.

Those listed were notified by mail that their name and outstanding balance would be posted on the Tax Department's Web site unless they paid up or set up a payment plan.

Two initiated payment plans and another submitted an offer, removing their names from the most recent list.

E-mail alerts track sex offenders

Hawaii residents can now receive e-mail alerts when a registered sex offender moves into their area or updates his or her personal information.

The e-mail alerts are generated by ZIP code parameters or within a small radius of a specific address.

Other information newly available on the Web site includes descriptions of offenders, aliases, volunteer organizations, professional licenses, convictions, a list of noncompliant offenders and safety tips.

Repairs will restrict use of Maui park

Camping will be restricted in the Kipahulu area of Haleakala National Park this summer, including the Fourth of July weekend, while the National Park Service refurbishes the campground, restrooms and parking lot of the park on the northeastern coast of Maui.

The multimillion-dollar project is scheduled for completion in September, according to an announcement.

Camping areas are still available at the summit area and at Hosmer's Grove at the 7,000-foot elevation. Three cabins and tent camping are available in the back-country area.
