Wong helps USA baseball in rout

Hawaii's Kolten Wong went 2-for-4 yesterday, scoring three times, to help Team USA win an exhibition baseball game 10-0 over Guatemala in Cary, N.C.

Wong, the Rainbows' center fielder last season, played right field and first base during the game at the National Training Complex. He had a double, a walk and two stolen bases.

In Wednesday's 15-1 victory over Guatemala, Wong played second base and had a run-scoring single and scored twice.

Paddlers rally past Surfers

Jordan Poirrier's run-scoring double in the sixth broke a 5-5 tie and the Paddlers went on to a 9-6 win over the Surfers in a Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League game yesterday at Central Oahu Regional Park.

Poirrier finished with four RBIs and Chris Esperon added two. Trailing 5-1, the Surfers tied it the bottom of the fifth, with Mark Anderson's RBI double highlighting the four-run inning.

In another HCBL game, the North Shore Waves used a 10-run eighth to roll past the Kauai Aliis 14-7. Chris Tanabe's two-run triple was one of seven hits by the Waves in the eighth.

Fifth A-A honor for UH's Wong

The freshman All-America honors became a party of five yesterday for Hawaii's Kolten Wong. The Kamehameha-Hawaii product, who started all 58 games for the Rainbows in center field, was named to the Rivals.com team, his fifth such selection.

The Hilo native earlier was chosen to the freshman All-America teams named by Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball, Baseball America, Ping! and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. He was the Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and earned first-team All-WAC honors as well.

Wong hit .341 with 21 doubles, two triples, 11 homers and 52 RBIs for UH. He also had a team-best 135 total bases, a .418 on-base percentage and 11 stolen bases.

He is currently playing for the USA Baseball National Team in North Carolina.

HPU signs 2 in soccer

Incoming freshmen Kainoa Kahui and Ryan Wurz have signed to play soccer for Hawaii Pacific.

Kahui, a recent graduate of Kamehameha, is a two-time all-state player and the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's 2008 defensive player of the year.

Wurz was a goalie at Central Valley (Wash.) High. His Under-19 team won the Washington state championship and qualified for the USYS west regionals.

The Sea Warriors, 11-5-2 last season, open the year Aug. 28 at home against Upper Iowa University.
