Former isle man sentenced for stock fraud
A federal judge in Seattle sentenced a former Honolulu man and disbarred attorney in Washington to 13 months in prison for securities fraud and failure to file income tax returns, according to the U.S. attorney in Seattle.
Tolan Furusho, 39, allowed a Bellevue, Wash., woman to use his law office for a “;pump and dump”; stock-fraud scheme.
The eight defendants bought publicly traded “;shell”; companies, falsified financial documents and then used faxes and news releases to boost the stock price.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Lord said Furusho was the “;gatekeeper to the financial marketplace”; and a key member of the fraud.
Furusho, a 1988 Punahou School graduate and former wrestler, pleaded guilty in November 2007. According to the Seattle Times, Furusho is a karate champion and world-class weightlifter who can bench-press 532 pounds.
