Chow returns to coaching roots
It's a summer afternoon in Waikiki. But Norm Chow is working like it's fall in Westwood.
Chow, now the UCLA offensive coordinator, is back in town to coach in the All-Poly Camp at Kapiolani Park. His career has taken him from BYU to USC to the NFL with the Tennessee Titans, but working the camp—which drew more than 300 players—conjures memories of his early years at Waialua High School.
“;Whatever level you coach it's all the same,”; Chow said. “;You coach young people and try to make them better, help them a little bit. It's been fun.”;
Chow is among coaches with Hawaii ties participating in the first All-Poly Camp to be held in Hawaii. The group includes Brian Cabral (Colorado), Joe Seumalo (Oregon State), Chad Kauhaahaa (Utah State) and Abu Maafala (Louisville). Hawaii was represented yesterday by Dave Aranda, Gordie Shaw, Brian Smith and Tony Tuioti.
Nike combine coming to Hawaii
Tyler McClaughry of ESPN announced to the campers that the company is bringing a Nike Football Combine to Hawaii next year. The NFL style combine is tentatively scheduled for early next year at Aloha Stadium.
ESPN runs 17 Nike combines across the country, sending highlights to college coaches.
“;We're really excited for a great partnership,”; said McClaughry, who said the talent level at this week's camp helped seal the decision.
Camp concludes with scrimmage
While the first two days were heavy on fundamentals, the camp closes this morning with a full-contact scrimmage.
“;That's why I came to this camp again,”; said Kapolei linebacker Shaydon Akuna, who also participated in All-Poly's Utah camp in June. “;I wanted to play in the scrimmage so I can show the coaches what I can bring.”;
Akuna already has scholarship offers from Hawaii and several Pac-10 schools.
