Hearn represents Hawaii with 75

John Hearn of Honolulu shot a 4-over par 75 to finish the first round of the PGA Professional National Championship in 160th place on the Santa Ana Golf Club course in New Mexico.

Hearn trails leader Scott Hebert of Michigan by nine strokes going into today's second round. Eric Dugas of Waikoloa had a 76, John Lynch of Honolulu shot a 79 and Ron Castillo of Lihue fired an 80.

The 312 players will be pared to the top 70 for the final two rounds. The top-20 finishers are eligible for the PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club in August.

 

Yawata goes wire-to-wire

Kyle Yawata fired a 72 in the final round to win the Pearl President's Cup with a 1-under par 215 yesterday at Pearl Country Club.

Yawata beat Jared Flores by eight strokes.

Lin Akiyama shot a 70 for the low round of the day to win the B flight. Mililani's Mark Milton took the C flight.

 

Denham leads Aliis in HCBL

Jared Denham of San Francisco State doubled in two runs in the bottom of the ninth to lead the Aliis over the Surfers 11-10 in the Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League at Mililani yesterday.

In other games, the Paddlers beat the Menehunes 8-7 in 10 innings and the Waves beat the Paniolos 5-3.

Hilo's Smith will play in Germany

Hawaii-Hilo guard John Smith has signed to play for SSV Lokomotive Bernau in Germany.

Smith averaged 16.3 points and 3.1 assists for the Vulcans in earning all-Pacific West first-team honors. He hit 36 percent of his attempts from long range.

Smith will replace Ryan Williams, who led Bernau in scoring last season with 24.9 ppg.
