Hawaiian Cement awards college scholarships
Hawaiian Cement has awarded scholarships to three college-bound children of its employees.
Christopher Rodrigues, son of Assistant Controller Colleen Rodrigues, has been awarded an $8,000 scholarship. The Maryknoll High School graduate will attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Dylan Morden, son of Lori Morden in the IT Division, has received a $4,000 scholarship. A Mililani High School graduate, he will attend Brigham Young University in Utah.
Randall Yamaoka, son of Maui Concrete and Aggregate Division Controller Roger Yamaoka, has been awarded a $4,000 scholarship to attend Maui Community College. Randall is a Maui High School graduate.
Recipients were chosen based on scholastic achievements, extracurricular activities, leadership and other qualities by a nonpartisan selection committee composed of educators with no employment connection to the company.

Mililani assisted living community opens sales office
The Plaza at Mililani, a rental assisted living community now under construction and due to open in January, has begun taking appointments for prospective residents.
The Mililani facility is designed to serve seniors with assisted living and memory care services with different levels of care.
Interested individuals may call 626-8807 to schedule one-on-one appointments at The Plaza at Punchbowl at 918 Lunalilo St. A refundable $250 deposit will secure a spot on the wait list.
Bankoh effort raises $105,000 for charity
More than 1,000 employees and their family members participated in the recent 2009 Bank of Hawaii Charity Walk at Kapiolani Park and raised $105,000 for the Hawaii Red Cross, Family Promise of Hawaii and The Salvation Army's Hawaiian and Pacific Islands Division. Funds raised from the 1.8 mile walk will give each nonprofit $35,000.
SBA recovery date offered to North Shore businesses
The U.S. Small Business Administration will hold a free workshop from 8 to 10 a.m. July 8 at Haleiwa Joe's, 66-011 Kamehameha Highway, in Haleiwa.
The SBA will present a recovery forum to update small-business owners about how new provisions of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act may help them sustain, manage and strengthen their firms during the current economic crisis. The SBA received $730 million in the recovery act to enact a series of provisions focused on helping unlock lending and get capital flowing to the small-business sector by cutting fees to borrowers, increasing guarantees to lenders, and offering new and expanded programs for many loans and contracting opportunities.
