NSSA surf titles to Lau, Jabour

Zeke Lau was among the champions crowned at the National Scholastic Surfing Association finals yesterday at San Clemente, Calif.

Lau, an incoming sophomore at Kamehameha, captured the Open Juniors title in 2- to 3-foot surf at Lower Trestles.

Kiron Jabour, from the North Shore, won both the explorer men's and juniors divisions.

Finishing third from Hawaii in their respective divisions were Kauai's Malia Manuel (women's open) and Alex Smith (men's open).

Millers headline QB Club lunch

Accomplished open ocean swimmers Mike Miller and daughter Mackenzie headline the program for tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon at the Pagoda Hotel.

Mike Miller has swum the Molokai, Catalina and English channels while Mackenzie has swum the Auau Channel between Lanai and Maui.

Also speaking are Mark Zeug, executive director of the Aloha State Games and Honolulu Advertiser sportswriter Wes Nakama.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., with the program at noon. The weekly event is open to the public.

Waves hold off Paddlers in HCBL

Run-scoring singles by Talph Knese and Case Miyahara in the top of the eighth inning proved to be the difference as the Waves defeated the Paddlers 7-6 in a Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League game yesterday at Mililani High.

The Paddlers closed to within a run in the bottom of the eighth on Dane Neilson's two-run double but stranded two runners when Waves reliever Jon Boersman got Matt James to ground out.

Yawata leads Pearl tournament

Kyle Yawata shot a 75 to keep the lead in the Pearl Presidents Cup at Pearl Country Club yesterday.

Yawata (143 over two rounds) leads Gary Haynie by five strokes going into today's final round.
