Man allegedly tried to kill family

Police arrested a 38-year-old Chinatown man at Straub Hospital on Friday afternoon on charges of arson and attempted murder.

Zhan Hang Yu had been hospitalized for burns caused by a June 2 fire at the Kukui Tower apartments. He allegedly set the fire in attempt to kill a family of four who lived in a 26th floor apartment in the building. A 19-year-old man suffered burns on his leg, while other family members were treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns.

On June 10, an Oahu grand jury indicted Yu for first-degree attempted murder, four counts of second-degree attempted murder, and first-degree arson.

Yu's bail was set at $1 million.

Police arrest 4 after attack

Police arrested four men, including two former all-star Farrington High School football players, for allegedly robbing a Honolulu business and threatening the worker with a machete Friday.

Officials said a 19-year-old man and an 18-year-old man entered the business at 2:25 p.m. and began chatting with the worker. Soon after a 20-year-old man with a red bandana covering his face entered with a machete and demanded money. Police said the three suspects escaped in a vehicle driven by the fourth suspect, a 20-year-old man, but they were stopped shortly afterward and arrested.

No charges were filed as of last night.

Crew rescues Maunawili hiker

Firefighters rescued a man in his 20s who hurt his head and leg while hiking yesterday alone on the Maunawili Falls trail.

Shortly before 5 p.m. a fire engine company hiked up to the man and splintered his injuries, said Honolulu Fire Capt. Earle Kealoha.

Fire helicopter Air One lifted the man off the trail and transferred him to paramedics waiting at Maunawili Park, at about 5:45 p.m., Kealoha said.

Firefighters put out Nanakuli blaze

About 25 firefighters yesterday extinguished an 8-acre brush fire in Nanakuli.

The blaze started about 11:15 a.m. between Helelua Street and Lualualei Naval Road, but didn't threaten any homes, said Honolulu Fire Capt. Earle Kealoha.

Three tankers, three engines and a ladder company brought the fire under control in about 40 minutes. No one was hurt. The cause of the fire remained undetermined.

Boats require ocean rescues

Firefighters made two ocean rescues yesterday in separate incidents in Kaneohe and on the North Shore.

About 1 p.m. an 18-foot Boston Whaler was adrift with three people on board about two miles from Moku Manu Island near Kaneohe Bay. A fire rescue boat arrived on scene and helped arrange a tow for the disabled boat, said fire department spokesman Capt. Earle Kealoha.

At 5:44 p.m. a 17-foot Sea Doo personal watercraft carrying four people had a mechanical failure about 20 yards offshore from Sunset Beach, Kealoha said. Surf made it difficult for the group to return to land, he said. A fire rescue boat towed the craft in an hour later.
