Hawaii Medical Service Association members are getting a break on exercise and fitness classes under a new HMSA program.

Discounts of up to 30 percent are available on many statewide health and wellness services and businesses through HMSA365.

Members just need to show their HMSA card at participating places to receive a discount.

“;It's coming at a very good time,”; said Dean Hamada, co-owner of Curves at Ala Moana. “;We're excited about it, if we can help ladies get fit.”;

He said monthly dues at Curves normally are $44. With an HMSA card, the cost is $39, with no service fee. The program offers low-impact exercise and stress relief in a social atmosphere, he said.

HMSA365 participants include weight-management programs, fitness centers and gyms, exercise classes, personal-trainer services, massage therapy, yoga and many others.

“;Despite a difficult economy, there's never been a better time to invest in your health,”; HMSA Medical Director Patricia Avila said in a news release. “;We encourage members to eat healthy, get regular physical activity and live a healthy life.

“;HMSA365 helps members maintain a healthy lifestyle, while keeping a lid on their expenses.”;

All HMSA members—more than 700,000—are eligible for the program, including 65C Plus and HMSA Plan for QUEST members. Members' dues were not used to develop the discount program, HMSA said. No registration is necessary and no claims are processed for services, it said.

“;For us, it's another opportunity to impact someone's life”; with a healthy lifestyle, said Larry Bush, YMCA president and chief executive officer.

He said that “;there's a preventative side of this,”; noting a person watching caloric intake and exercising is going to be healthy and will cost HMSA “;a whole lot less money. It's a benefit. It's also self-serving.”;

Avila said maintaining good health “;may help prevent some costly chronic conditions, like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity.

“;HMSA365 helps make a healthy lifestyle a little more affordable and that's especially important during these difficult economic times,”; she said.
