Islam Day issue is Interfaith topic

The state Legislature's controversial action establishing an Islam Day observance will be the topic at a Wednesday meeting of the Interfaith Open Table.

Hakim Ouansafi, president of the Muslim Association of Hawaii, will speak about the issue and the planned Sept. 24 Islam Day event at the 7 a.m. meeting at Harris United Methodist Church, 20 S. Vineyard Blvd.

Also on the program will be a talk by Daniel Gluck, staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii on “;Separation of Church and State: Where is the Line?”; The ACLU objected to the lawmakers' resolution as a violation of the U.S. Constitution which bars government from favoring one religion over others.

The Interfaith Open Table meets monthly. It is open to the public.

Baptists hold women's conference

Applying faith to achieve dreams and overcome disillusionment will be explored at an Aug. 8 conference for women sponsored by the Oahu Baptist Network and the She Speaks Ministry.

“;Happily Ever After: Living the Fairy Tale Ending”; is the theme of the program of workshops and worship from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Koolau Golf Course in Kaneohe.

Mary Kassian, author of several books including “;The Feminist Mistake”; and “;Conversation Peace,”; will lead three discussion sessions. A professor at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and founder of “;Girls Gone Wise”; ministry for teen-agers, she is a frequent lecturer to church and women's groups around the country. She has produced several Lifeway Bible Studies and videos about applying Biblical principles in women's lives and relationships.
