3 linemen commit to UH

When a Kailua teammate committed to Hawaii, Calen Friel was even more motivated to earn a spot with the Warriors.

“;I told him, 'I'm with you all the way,' “; Friel said of Surfriders receiver Corey Lau, who decided on UH last week.

Friel (6-foot-2, 245 pounds) joined Lau in UH's recruiting class by accepting a scholarship offer. Friel plays linebacker, fullback and tight end for the Surfriders but expects to compete at defensive end at Hawaii.

Friel attended UH's Big Man's Camp this week, as did 6-4, 295-pound Pearl City guard David Lefotu and 6-foot, 290-pound Kaimuki defensive lineman Viliami Fonokalafi, who also committed to the Warriors.

Kono out, Kim advances

DEVENS, MASS. » Honolulu's Stephanie Kono couldn't hold off a rally by her opponent, while former Big Island resident Kimberly Kim made a successful closing run to advance to today's quarterfinals of the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship.

Kono, the stroke-play medalist, led her match with Korea's Jisoo Park until 15, when Park's 15-foot putt squared the contest. Park won the 16th with a par to go 1 up and, after the two halved No. 17, Kono's birdie putt that would have tied the match lipped out.

Kono had advanced to afternoon play with a 2-and-1 win over Tiffany Lua yesterday morning at Red Tail Golf Course.

Kim, the 2006 U.S. Women's Amateur champ, won both of her matches yesterday 2 and 1 against Canadians, first defeating Carolina Kim, then Sara-Maude Juneau.

Menehune hold off Surfers' rally

Antonius Kreitz's bases-loaded triple highlighted a seven-run first and the Menehune held off the Surfers 10-8 in yesterday's Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League game at Central Oahu Regional Park.

The Surfers closed to within 9-8 in the top of the eighth, with Brent Ohrman's double accounting for two of the team's four runs in the inning. Ohrman was stranded at third when Menehune reliever Drew Sheridan caught Victor Torres looking at a called third strike and then got Ryan Majercik to fly out to center to end the threat.

» In yesterday's second game, the Waimea Waves topped the Oahu Paddlers 3-1 as Kendall Lewis, Jon Boersma and Kelsey Outram combined on a four-hitter. Lewis pitched the first seven innings, allowing no runs on three hits and striking out five.

Hawaii's Ching a Gold Cup pick

JOHANNESBURG » Forward Brian Ching and defender Steve Cherundolo are back from injuries and on the U.S. roster for next month's CONCACAF Gold Cup, joined primarily by national team backups.

Forwards Freddy Adu and Charlie Davies, defender Heath Pearce and goalkeeper Luis Robles are the only holdovers on the roster that also were with the U.S. at the Confederations Cup, where the Americans upset No. 1 Spain on Wednesday to advance to Sunday's final.

The roster was announced yesterday.
