Wie seeking to break into LPGA win column in Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. » The $2 million Wegmans LPGA has 18 of the season's top 20 money winners, including No. 1 Cristie Kerr and Hawaii's Michelle Wie, left, at No. 18. The field also features Anna Nordqvist, a 22-year-old rookie from Sweden who won this month's major, the LPGA Championship, in only her fifth professional start. Absent is top-ranked Lorena Ochoa, who won here in 2005 and 2007, and the 2008 runner-up, Suzann Pettersen.

Korea's Eun-Hee Ji won here last year for her only win on the LPGA Tour.

$1 million raised by Sony Open

The Sony Open in Hawaii, the flagship fundraising event for the Friends of Hawaii Charities, Inc., successfully met its goal in the “;Drive to A $Million”; this year.

The organization distributed $1 million in the form of charitable grants to more than 130 not-for-profit charities that serve Hawaii's children, women, elderly and those in need. The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Inc. provided matching funds for each dollar raised at the PGA event at Waialae Country Club, supplemented by contributions from The Friends Club and SBS, sponsor of the LPGA's SBS Open event held at Turtle Bay.

Turtle Bay hosts McGladrey event

Applications for the July 12 McGladrey Team Championship qualifying golf tournament at Turtle Bay Resort are available.

The field is limited to 10 three-member amateur teams, with the winning threesome advancing to the Aloha Section Championship on Aug. 10 at Kahili Golf Course on Maui.

Entries are being accepted online at PGA.com/teamchampionship, or by calling 293-8574. The deadline is July 10.

The Hawaii sectional winner advances to the national championship Oct. 26-28 at Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort.
