Police recover 2 firearms stolen from officer's personal vehicle

A tip helped Honolulu police yesterday recover two firearms that were stolen from a police officer's personal vehicle on June 5.

Police found the handgun and rifle in Kailua yesterday morning. No further information was given on where the guns were found.

No one has been arrested, and the investigation remains open, police said yesterday.

Besides the two guns, the officer—who was off-duty when the theft occurred—lost ammunition and his identification card.

Driver in Thursday vehicle crash on Maui succumbs to his injuries

An 18-year-old Maui man died Friday at Maui Memorial Medical Center of injuries he suffered last week when the pickup truck he was driving hit a guard rail on Hana Highway in Haiku and landed in a gulch, police said yesterday.

Kepa Kahakauwila was driving the blue pickup at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and was headed west on Hana Highway near Holokai Road when it veered right and collided into a guardrail, overturned and landed in the gulch, police said.

One of the two passengers was treated at a hospital and released on Monday. The other was flown to Oahu for medical treatment.

The traffic death was the eighth so far this year on Maui County roads, compared with 11 fatalities at the same time last year.

Moiliili man accused of threatening wife with knife and assaulting her

A 20-year-old Moiliili man was arrested for allegedly threatening his wife at knifepoint and physically assaulting her.

Police said the man and the 20-year-old woman were arguing June 16 when the man allegedly threatened the woman with a knife.

He then allegedly assaulted her, causing minor injuries, police said.

The woman reported the incident Monday, and the man was arrested on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening and abuse of a family member.
