Kono medals in Publinx play

Honolulu's Stephanie Kono carded a 6-under 68 yesterday for a 36-hole 138 to earn medalist honors in yesterday's stroke play qualifying round of the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship in Devens, Mass.

Kono, who just finished her freshman year at UCLA, edged New York's Annie Park by a stroke. Also qualifying for the 64-player match play portion with Hawaii ties were Mari Chun (145), Kristina Merkle (145), Kimberly Kim (147) and Miki Ueoka (150).

Failing to qualify were Cyd Okino (155), Reiko Fujii (156), Kalea Heu (169) and Shannon Abarra (172).

Okazaki wins OCC event

Lisa Okazaki ran away with the title of the Oahu Country Club Women's Invitational, finishing nine points ahead of her nearest competitor yesterday.

Okazaki, a University of Portland junior, accumulated 49 gross Stableford points to win the championship flight. Lily Yao was at 50 while Sanae Vierra and Bev Kim finished with 49.

Jaye Gray on the overall net title in a sudden death playoff against Estra Quilausing.

Kim took the net title of the championship flight with a 65. Other net winners were: Quilausing (A, 76), Jo-Ann Chun (B, 71) Marty Drew (C, 73) and Maud Chang (D, 68).

5 qualify for USGA junior

Honolulu's Alina Ching carded a 75 to win yesterday's USGA Girls Junior sectional qualifier at the Mauna Lani Resort's North Course.

Ching, Wailuku's Cassy Isagawa (78) and Japan's Serena Aoki (80) advance to next month's national tournament in Bedminster, N.J.

In the boys sectional qualifier, Japan's Mikiya Akutsu shot a 70-144 to take the top spot. Honolulu's Lorens Chan finished at 75-147 for the second spot.

Honolulu's Alika Bell is the first alternate (80-148) while Haiku's Justin Keiley (76-150) defeated Thomas Yamashita (78-150) of Kapolei on the second playoff hole for second alternate.

3 Wahine honored in water polo

Senior Kelly Mason was named a first-team All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches, one of three Hawaii players honored yesterday.

It was the fourth All-American selection for utility player Mason, her second as a first-teamer. Named to the third team was junior 2-meter Leonie Van Der Molen while junior 2-meter Dagmar Genee was an honorable mention.

Gatorade honor to Ka'u junior

Ka'u High junior Jacob Edwards was named the Gatorade Hawaii Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year yesterday.

At the recent state meet, Edwards won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, finished fifth in the triple jump and seventh in the long jump to lead the Trojans to seventh place. A football and soccer player for Ka'u, Edwards carries a 3.63 grade point average.

Menehune rout Allis

Carl Mohn drove in two runs and Antonius Kreitz scored three times to lead the Menehune to a 10-2 victory over the Allis in a Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League game at Central Oahu Regional Park.

Starter Dustin Fitzgerald threw six strong innings, giving up three hits and striking out seven to pick up the victory.

Seto signs with Oregon JC

Baldwin's Lincoln Seto, the Maui Interscholastic League player of the year in basketball, has signed to play at Southwestern Oregon Community College.

Seto led the Bears to an undefeated record in the MIL, averaging 24 points.
