Kaimana Awards honor 21

Twenty-one high school athletes, representing all island leagues, received $2,000 scholarships at yesterday's HMSA Kaimana Awards Luncheon at the Hilton Waikiki Prince Kuhio.

Of the group, Farrah Madanay of Punahou, Waimea's Benjie Baclig and Colton Manley from Molokai were named Distinguished Recipients and given an additional $1,000. Madanay competed in basketball, cross country and track; Baclig competed in bowling, cross country, paddling, swimming and track; and Manley in cross country and wrestling.

In addition, 10 schools from each of the leagues and divisions received $1,500. Selected were: Keaau and Parker, BIIF; Kamehameha and Hawaii Baptist, ILH; Island School, KIF; King Kekaulike and Kamehameha-Maui, MIL; and Moanalua, Radford and Anuenue, OIA.

Services set for Sagapolutele

Services for former NFL player Pio Sagapolutele are scheduled for Friday in Honolulu.

The former Maryknoll sports star died June 7 from the effects of a brain aneurysm at age 39.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. to noon at Sacred Hearts Church on Wilder Avenue, followed by mass. A memorial reception will be at Central Union Church from 4 to 6 p.m.

Burial will be at Hawaiian Memorial Cemetery in Kaneohe.

Reardon, James at QB luncheon

Star-Bulletin sports columnist Dave Readon and Hawaii track and field coach Carmyn James headline tomorrow's speakers program at the Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon at the Pagoda Hotel.

Reardon will discuss “;The Centurions,”; the paper's selection of the top 100 players in the UH football program's 100 years of play. James is back from the NCAA championships where the Rainbow Wahine finished tied for 36 and Annette Wichmann and Amber Kaufman earned All-American honors.

Also speaking is Mark Zeug, executive director for the Aloha State Games.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. followed by the noon program.

Rolex junior golf title to Kim

In her final junior golf tournament, former Big Island resident Kimberly Kim defeated Jessica Korda of Bradenton, Fla., on the first hole of a playoff to win the Rolex Girls Junior Championship at Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., Friday.

The 17-year-old Kim parred the playoff hole, while Korda three-putted for a bogey after both finished at 2-over-par 218.
