Hawaii opens 50th anniversary art contest for kids nationwide

Students nationwide, kindergarten to grade 12, are invited to submit artwork for an 8-by-20-foot mosaic mural commemorating Hawaii's 50th year of statehood. The work will comprise thousands of drawings and photographs centered on the theme “;Hawaii: A Great Place to Live, Learn and Play.”;

The mosaic is being organized by the 50th Anniversary of Hawaii Statehood Commission and Project S.N.A.P., a national organization dedicated to helping youth develop into socially responsible leaders. Hawaii's mural is among numerous mural projects nationwide developed under S.N.A.P.

Deadline for works is June 30; interested artists can visit www.projectsnap.org/hawaii.html.

» “;Moon Over Honolulu,”; featuring lei making, hula by Halau Na Maka O Ka Lauae, a performance by Guy Cruz and “;Hawaii 50,”; an exhibit of old Hawaii photos by Honolulu Star-Bulletin photographers, marks the Honolulu Academy of Arts' latest ARTafterDARK event. Food will be provided by town restaurant.

The Friday event opens with an oli from Kupuna Lauae at 6 p.m. and continues to 9 p.m. Admission is $10. Call 532-8700.

» Those interested in woodcut printing can learn from master printer Paul Mullowney and artist Sandow Birk at a 13-hour intensive workshop presented by the Koa Gallery at Kapiolani Community College. The duo will cover how to get the image on the block, carving techniques, ideas for large-scale work, printing using a Japanese baren, use of Japanese papers, collage and chine colle and the use of traditional wheat starch paste.

The two-day workshop runs 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 28, with a potluck to follow. Cost: $125 general, $100 seniors and Honolulu Printmakers members and $90 students. Limited seating, call 734-9374.

» Attention, shutterbugs: HI Art Magazine, an online mag, is holding a photography competition about Hawaii's faces. Entries will be judged by Jay Jensen, director of exhibitions and collections at The Contemporary Museum. Selected images will be compiled into a book, and a gallery exhibition will be held in November at the Wailoa Center in Hilo. Big Isle visitors and residents have until Wednesday to check out the fourth annual Hawaii Photo Expo at the Wailoa Center for Culture and the Arts in Wailoa State Park. The show, presented by the Hilo Photography Club, features 111 images by Big Island photographers, selected by juror Ted Orland. Gallery hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays except Wednesday, when doors open at noon. Admission is free.
