Mayor Mufi Hannemann announced that Bellows Beach Park in Waimanalo will be reopened for the Independence Day weekend after being closed to the public this month.
“;We're very pleased to continue to make this wonderful beach park available for public recreation and enjoyment,”; Hannemann said in a prepared statement. “;We trust that the public knows how important it is to keep that area safe and clean for everyone.”;
Marine Corps Base Hawaii had initially ordered that the beach be closed to address environmental and safety concerns in the area.
Both the city and the Marines are currently discussing these issues.
The city will allow those who held camping permits for the June 5-7 and June 12-14 weekends to obtain substitute permits for another summer weekend on a priority basis.
The beach will be reopen at noon July 3, and new park rules and regulations will be enforced.
