Though they attend different schools, Corey Lau and Samson Anguay became quite familiar with each other while making the rounds at summer camps and combines.

The speedy receivers will soon have a chance to combine their skills after both accepted scholarship offers to join the Hawaii football team yesterday.

“;I'd say we're pretty good friends, we compete against each other, and now we'll be at the same school in the future. He's a good guy and I'm thrilled,”; said Lau, an incoming senior at Kailua.

Lau and Anguay, a Campbell standout, both participated in UH's skills camp this week and jumped at the chance to commit to the Warriors, joining Moanalua lineman Frank Loyd in UH's 2010 recruiting class.

“;I'm still asking myself if this is actually real,”; Anguay said. “;It's always been my dream to play Hawaii football, and when (UH coach Greg McMackin) offered I said I was going to commit right away.

“;I want to play in front of my family and show my hometown and show everybody in the nation that Hawaii is a school to be reckoned with.”;

Lau and Anguay bring similar statures to the field, and both idolized former UH slotback Chad Owens growing up. Lau measures in at 5-foot-8 and 140 pounds, Anguay at 5-8, 155.

Lau — the point guard on Kailua's Division II state champion basketball team — was timed at 4.44 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance combine on May 30, tied for the fastest time among the participants. He also had the top mark in the L-drill at 6.60 seconds.

He attended Saint Louis before transferring to Kailua last school year and played for current UH graduate assistant Craig Stutzmann while on the Crusaders' junior varsity team.

Speed is also among Anguay's top attributes. He placed fourth in the 100-meter dash at the HHSAA track and field championships last month, and Moanalua head coach Arnold Martinez can attest to his big-play ability, having coached against him last season.

“;Samson's the real deal with his breakaway speed,”; Martinez said.

Anguay's schedule has been packed this week, attending the UH camp in the mornings and workouts at Campbell in the afternoons.

Martinez also foresees a bright future for Loyd, who also committed to UH this week and will attend the Warriors' Big Man Camp, which starts Monday.

Martinez said the 6-foot-4, 265-pound Loyd — Moanalua's starting left tackle — has already met academic requirements.

“;They're going to get one heck of a kid,”; Martinez said. “;He had a goal of playing college football. We have a plan to help kids do that, but it takes a lot of work, but Frank never shied away from any of it. He deserves it.

“;Frank is critical for us. We looked back at the stats, Frank did not give up a sack on his side (last season).”;
