Track award to Massenburg

Bailey Massenburg, the reigning Gatorade girls cross country runner of the year, picked up her second state honor when being named the Gatorade girls track and field athlete for Hawaii.

The recent King Kekaulike graduate won the 800- and 1,500-meter races at the state championship as Na Ali'i finished fourth. She has signed to play at Point Loma (Calif.) Nazarene this fall.

Massenburg, who graduated with a 4.08 GPA, is now eligible for the national honor.

Waves top Menehune

Brent Sargenti's run-scoring double highlighted a three-run fourth to lead the Waves over the Menehune 7-5 in a Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League game yesterday at Central Oahu Regional Park.

Case Miyahara drove in two runs for the Waves. Ridge Carpenter scored twice for the Menehune.

Turtle Bay signs touring pros

Golfers Tony and Gipper Finau have signed to represent Turtle Bay Resort as touring pros.

The two are from Salt Lake City and are considered among the rising stars under the age of 25.

Kekai Classic moves to Waikiki

In conjunction with Albert “;Rabbit”; Kekai's 90th birthday, the longboard surf competition named for the legendary surfer returns to Waikiki.

The Rabbit Kekai Longboard Classic is scheduled for Aug. 23-29 for its 14th running. The event has been held in Costa Rica the past 13 years.

The competition includes the Toes on the Nose men's event and the women's Gidget Open Pro. It will be held in conjunction with the annual Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation OceanFest.

UH athletes honored by WAC

The University of Hawaii had 31 athletes named to the Western Athletic Conference all-academic team for spring sports, including 12 from the women's track and field squad.

Baseball had six players honored, while there were four from softball, three each from women's golf and men's tennis, two from men's golf and one from women's tennis.

UH had another 22 freshmen and one junior transfer named all-academic for the school year representing 10 sports sponsored by the WAC.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests.

All-academic PWC team named

Athletes from Hawaii's four Pacific West Conference schools constituted nearly half of the conference's all-academic team announced this week.

Brigham Young-Hawaii had 19 who earned at least a 3.30 grade-point average, while Chaminade had 18, Hawaii Pacific 17 and Hawaii-Hilo 16. Overall, 155 athletes from seven schools were honored.

The conference will use the list to determine the scholar-athlete of the year in each of the 11 sports sponsored.
