Assault suspected in baby's injuries

Big Island police are investigating the apparent assault of a 6-month-old boy with internal injuries.

Police said officers responded to a 5 a.m. call yesterday from the North Kohala Community Hospital, where doctors determined a baby boy was suffering from internal head injuries. The baby and his mother were flown to Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, where the child is receiving additional treatment, police said. Police did not identify a suspect in the case.

2 men arrested in theft of guitars

Two men were arrested in connection with the theft of two guitars belonging to local singer and musician Anuhea Jenkins.

The two guitars were reported stolen Sunday after Jenkins had parked her car in Waikiki. The next day, two men were spotted with the stolen guitars at a local pawn shop, where they attempted to sell them, police said.

One of the suspects, a 22-year-old man with no local address, was arrested in Waikiki on Wednesday by plainclothes officers who identified him from a video surveillance photo taken at the pawn shop. He is being held on suspicion of second-degree theft.

The second suspect, a 25-year-old Moiliili man, turned himself in yesterday morning at the main police station and was arrested on suspicion of second-degree theft. He was later released pending investigation.

Elderly person rescued from fire

Firefighters rescued an elderly person from a burning home in Pahoa on Wednesday, according to a Hawaii County Fire Department news release.

The fire at 15-3065 Naele Road was reported at 3:26 p.m. Firefighters went into the three-bedroom home through the kitchen and confined the fire to a bedroom and bathroom where the fire appeared to have started, the release said.

The victim, described only as elderly, was found lying on the floor of the bedroom and was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, the release said.

The victim's condition was not available. Damage to the house was estimated at $50,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
