Calling all bookworms
Time to put on the tank top and shorts, find that handheld fan and dust off a big cardboard box or two. Yes, it's the annual Friends of the Library Book Sale, marking its 62nd year.
Despite the hot and crowded McKinley High School cafeteria, fans of the event know that hours can go by before the treasure-finding ends. And it's worth it. All proceeds benefit Hawaii's 51 public libraries. It's grand to see folks come out and support a literary and worthwhile cause, year after year. The sale opens to the public at 9 a.m. tomorrow through June 28; for schedule, see http://www.friendsofthelibraryofhawaii.org.
TAKE THAT, YOU SWINE
Still some oink in the air
Swine flu, H1N1, whatever you choose to call it, is still rooting around. With 100 new cases reported last week, the pigs are still flying.
Furloughs and hot weather have taken over the headlines, but it doesn't mean we should let our guard down. Keep up the hygiene habits, and hopefully there will be no flu in your future.
HAPPY FATHER'S DAY
Another tool belt? Set of beer mugs?
The rush — and panic — isn't nearly as bad as in May for Mother's Day, but here's a reminder that Sunday is Father's Day.
Yes, Dear Ol' Dad, and grandpa and uncle, need pampering, too, and there's a slew of special events around town Sunday. These include the annual Father's Day breakfast benefit for the Hawaii Kai Lions Club at Kaiser High School cafeteria; classic-car show 2-8 p.m. at Kahala Mall; and the Bank of Hawaii Family Sunday at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. See today's HILife section for more ideas.
