Ito scholarship to Tanigawa

Recent Pearl City High graduate Daniel Tanigawa has been named the recipient of the Monte Ito Memorial Scholarship.

The $1,500 college scholarship is named for the late Honolulu Advertiser sportswriter, and recognizes outstanding achievements or potential in journalism and golf.

Tanigawa, who will attend Hawaii, was sports editor of the Pearl City newspaper for two years. He also played for the Chargers golf and baseball teams, and ran cross country.

Kim qualifies for U.S. Open

Kimberly Kim will be the only golfer with Hawaii ties in the field of next month's U.S. Women's Open in Bethlehem, Pa.

Kim, a former Big Island resident currently living in Arizona, won the Santa Cruz, Calif., sectional qualifier Monday with a 143. This will be the third appearance in this event for the 17-year-old, who became the youngest winner of the U.S. Women's Amateur in 2006 at 14 years and 11 months.

Missing the Open for the first time since her debut at age 13 in 2003 was Michelle Wie (Punahou '07). She was a shot off the qualifying score in Rockville, Md., when carding a 145.

Recent Moanalua graduate Kristina Merkle finished a shot back (146) of Japanese pro Miki Saiki (145) at the Wailua, Kauai, qualifier. Punahou sophomore Cyd Okino, who won the Hawaii sectional last year, carded a 153.

Three other Hawaii golfers were in the field with Kim. Stephanie Kono (Punahou '08) shot a 151, Ayaka Kaneko (Sacred Hearts '08) a 152 and Mari Chun (Kamehameha '05) a 153.
