Akau shoots 69 at Manoa Cup

Zachary Akagi-Bustin had to chip onto the 18th green from near the parking lot at the Manoa Cup yesterday. He shot a 79 and failed to make the cut. Defending champion and top seed Alex Ching will open his title defense today against No. 64 Ron Yogi. Yogi shot a 79 yesterday and survived a playoff to qualify for this week's match-play golf tournament at the Oahu Country Club. Ching only had to sit and watch as 96 golfers attempted to secure 63 spots in the opening round of this prestigious local event. Christian Akau earned the second seed by leading all the qualifiers yesterday with a 69. He edged No. 3 seed David Saka by a single shot. The tournament runs all week with the champion crowned on Saturday.

Wetmore signs with Indians

Kirk Wetmore, a left-handed pitcher out of Bellevue (Wash.) C.C., who had committed to Hawaii for next season, signed a pro contract with the Cleveland Indians yesterday.

Azumazeki honored

Sumo pioneer Jesse Kuhaulua, known as Azumazeki during his 45-year career in the sport, was the subject of a resolution read in the House of Representatives yesterday.

Kuhaulua was hailed for his “;achievements to sumo and his contributions to enhancing United States-Japan relations.”;

Istvan, Rumpf honored

Hawaii Pacific's Adam Istvan was named second team All-PacWest and Connor Rumpf earned freshman of the year honors in men's golf yesterday.

Top 100 starts tomorrow

We're calling it “;The Centurions.”; The 100 greatest players, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of University of Hawaii football.

Starting tomorrow we count them down, with photos and stories recounting the stars, from the Wonder Teams of the 1920s through the Dream Season of the Sugar Bowl.

A panel of media — some linked with UH football back to the 1950s — ranked them, in consultation with every head coach of the past 35 years, except for one.

Five will be revealed each day from tomorrow to the end of June, and then each of the top 30 gets his own day and profile by a Star-Bulletin or guest writer. The running list will be posted online, on a Web page where readers can comment on each selection.

It's six weeks until the start of fall camp, but there will be a daily dose of UH football history every day in the Star-Bulletin.
