Question: Whatever happened to the Malama Learning Center that was planned as an extension to Kapolei High School?

Answer: Project coordinator Paula Nagao said the Malama Learning Center is undergoing a redesign “;due to rising construction costs and the state of our economy.”; But groundbreaking should begin next spring, she added.

The $10 million center was envisioned by Principal Al Nagasako as a model of green or sustainable construction that would be used for programs that promoted environmental education. Nagasako announced the project in April 2008 and estimated construction would begin within two years.

“;MLC is still actively fundraising and despite the tough economic times we all face, we've seen many instances of businesses and individuals wanting to help us with discounts and pro bono services because they believe in our mission and in building sustainability,”; said Nagao.

She estimated that the first phase of construction would cost $5 million and cover the cost of a multipurpose building for student performances and lectures. Kapolei has never had an auditorium, she added.

Other pilot education projects include the installation of a star compass under the direction of Nainoa Thompson of the Polynesian Voyaging Society; workshops including Growing Backyard Edible Gardens and Vermicomposting; and sponsorship of alternative energy education with the Ho'ola Leadership Academy.
