Hawaii's Wong gets frosh honor

University of Hawaii freshman outfielder Kolten Wong was named to Ping! Baseball's All-Freshman first team yesterday.

Wong, of Hilo, started all 58 games for the Rainbows in center field with a .341 batting average, 11 homers, 52 RBIs, 46 runs scored and 11 stolen bases.

Waves hold off Menehune

The Waves edged the Menehune 5-4 in the Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League yesterday at Central Oahu Regional Park.

Joseph Vierra went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Chris Kimmeth went 2-for-4 with two runs knocked in to lead the Waves, who jumped out to leads of 3-0 and 5-2 before staving off the Menehune.

Chris Happ, Walter Gerbus, Jason Okamoto and Nick Thode each had two hits to lead the Menehune.

HPU signs 2 for baseball

The Hawaii Pacific University baseball team announced the signing of two community college players yesterday.

Tyler Davis (Central Point, Ore.) and Mike Greene (Lebanon, Ore.) of Lower Columbia Community College (Wash.) join the Sea Warriors as juniors.

Davis, an outfielder, batted .287 with 14 RBIs and 19 stolen bases last year, while Greene posted a 1.65 ERA as a pitcher with the Red Devils.

Whitford gets regional honor

Brigham Young-Hawaii runner Amanda Whitford was named to the ESPN The Magazine All-District Women's Track and Field/Cross Country Team, the school announced.
