A wildfire broke out in Makakilo yesterday, coming within 50 to 100 feet of homes along Elele Street and Elele Place.

  Firefighters received a call at about 12:20 p.m. and managed to contain the flames in about an hour, according to Capt. Terry Seelig.

The fire started in Awanui Gulch and climbed toward several houses.

Seelig said about 30 firefighters were on the scene to fight the blaze, which burned about three-quarters of an acre of brush.

He said no one was injured in the fire and that no homes were threatened. Officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire.

A Makakilo resident who lives above the gulch claims to have heard a “;pop”; and saw a pink flare fall near the area where the fire started.

Wayne Kawakami ran to his bedroom and scanned for movement on the other side of the valley from where the flare appeared to come.

After calling 911, he said, “;I could see flames go as high as 20 feet.”;

This was the fourth fire that Kawakami has seen in the area since he moved to Makakilo in 1991.

With the wildfire season starting, Seelig reminded the public to be vigilant and careful when working with fire, especially in an area with combustibles, such as dry brush.

He urged the public to call as soon as they see a fire and to report anything suspicious.
