Ex-police 'hero' is arrested on domestic abuse charges

A 43-year-old former police officer who allegedly assaulted a 40-year-old woman in their Laie home and threatened to use firearms surrendered to police yesterday after a five-hour standoff.

Police were called at 3:40 a.m. to 55-445 Iosepa St., where there was a complaint that a man was high on drugs and had allegedly assaulted the woman during a domestic argument.

The man also allegedly threatened to use guns he had in the house, police said.

Police said a 17-year-old girl was also in the house and that both females received bruising and redness to the arms but refused treatment.

When the woman tried to leave, the former police officer said he would shoot the responding police officers, police said.

Police, including a Specialized Services Division unit, responded.

The man remained inside and finally surrendered to police at 8:35 a.m.

He was arrested on suspicion of two counts of abuse of a family member—one of which was a felony and the other a misdemeanor—first-degree terroristic threatening and a felony drug offense.

Police recovered narcotics from the suspect's house.

The former officer left the Police Department about five years ago.

He was lauded by then-Assistant Police Chief Boisse Correa as a hero in 2003 when he helped to capture David Scribner, one of three inmates who had escaped from Halawa Correctional Facility. The others were bank robber Albert Batalona and Warren Elicker. They had been hiding in Hauula Valley for nearly a week.

Police detain man believed to have fled accident scene

A 19-year-old man was arrested Monday for allegedly driving a stolen vehicle and fleeing the scene of an accident in May, police said.

The suspect had been pursued by officers after the May collision but avoided arrest, police said.

Police found the suspect in the Ala Moana area and arrested him on suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, refusing to stop, motor vehicle collision/failure to give information, reckless driving and driving without a license.
