UH duo qualifies for NCAA finals

Hawaii's Emily Sheppard and Amber Kaufman qualified for the women's high jump finals yesterday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.

Sheppard and Kaufman were among 15 competitors to clear 5 feet, 9 3/4 inches (1.77 meters) during the preliminary round.

Both needed just one attempt to clear the first two heights of the event, 5-7 and 5-8 1/2 .

Kaufman, the West regional champion, cleared the bar on her second attempt at 5-9 3/4 . Sheppard was down to her third and final attempt before securing a spot in tomorrow's finals.

UH senior Annett Wichmann begins competition in the heptathlon today with the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200-meter dash. The event concludes tomorrow with the long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run.

 

Hawaii flavor at Iowa JC

Seven football players from Hawaii will join longtime island coach Mike Pavich, who is an assistant at Iowa Western Community College.

Joe Kaahu and Isaac Lum (Castle), Broderick Tavui and Donni Campbell (Radford), Makana Hoopai (Baldwin), Isaac Ulukita (Damien) and Jasper Hunt (Aiea) have signed to play for the Reivers.

2 local players sign with HPU

Kailua's Kale Sumner and Mid-Pacific's Wade Tamaru have signed letters of intent to join the Hawaii Pacific baseball team, the school announced yesterday.

Sumner was a Star-Bulletin first-team All-State pick as a utility player. He moved from third base to catcher this season and hit .440 in OIA Red East play. Tamaru, a shortstop, made third team.
