Hawaii to get $483,000 in job help
Hawaii will receive nearly $483,000 of a total $455.6 million that the U.S. Department of Labor is releasing to states to provide career training and employment and case-management services to workers who lose their jobs due to outsourcing and foreign trade.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 includes a major expansion and reform of the Trade Adjustment Assistance program to ensure that all U.S. workers negatively affected by trade have the skills, resources and support to gain new employment.
Longs selling Mobi PCS phones
Longs Drugs has begun selling Mobi PCS wireless phones exclusively at its 32 stores in Hawaii.
Longs is offering Mobi's most popular Motorola, LG and Kyocera handsets beginning at $79. Once a customer purchases a Mobi phone at Longs, a call will complete the activation and set-up process.
Mobi PCS has Oahu retail sites at Pearlridge Center, Windward City Shopping Center, Kapolei Ace Center, Town Center of Mililani, Pearl Harbor Navy Exchange and Salt Lake Shopping Center, and Kapahulu Avenue and South King Street.
Maui property info center opening
A&B Kane LLC will open its Kahului Town Sales Information Center tomorrow.
The company, a subsidiary of A&B Properties Inc., plans to start construction of the first phase of its Aina o Kane residential and mixed-use development within Kahului Town early next year.
Plans for the development's Professional Plaza call for fee-simple commercial condominiums for professionals such as doctors, dentists and accountants. The surrounding neighborhood will offer restaurants, galleries, theaters, parks and beaches, all within walking distance.
The first units available at The Residences at Aina o Kane will include 42 two- and three-bedroom condominiums, starting in size at 814 square feet and with prices beginning at $320,800. Occupancy is expected to occur in mid-2011.
The sales center, located in Maui Mall at 70 East Kaahumanu Ave., will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. daily.
Credit score seminar offered
NorthStar Family of Companies, which offers residential mortgage products, will host a free credit-score-improvement seminar on Saturday.
The seminar, which will include other topics for first-time home buyers, will take place from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at company headquarters on the seventh floor of 333 Queen St.
FDA approves Kai Sensors device
Honolulu-based Kai Sensors has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance to market the Kai Sensors Non-Contact Respiratory Rate Spot Check to physicians, hospitals and clinics.
The Kai RSpot, as it is also called, offers a wireless way to measure a person's respiratory rate in hospital and clinical settings.

The American Society of Clinical Oncology presented the clinical trials participation award to the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii's Minority Based Community Clinical Oncology Program. The award is a credit to all cancer care physicians, nurses and hospitals who participated in clinical trial activities.
