Hawaii lands 3 on U.S. squad

Three players from Hawaii have been named to the 12-member U.S. Junior National Men's Volleyball Team that will compete at the FIVB World Championships this summer in India.

Libero Erik Shoji (Punahou '08), hitter Brad Lawson ('Iolani '08) and hitter Tri Bourne (Academy of the Pacific '07) were selected. All three were members of the U.S. team that won the bronze medal last year at the world championships.

Shoji and Lawson play for Stanford and Bourne for USC.

The tournament runs from July 31 to Aug. 9.

Manoa Cup starts June 15

The Manoa Cup, Hawaii's oldest golf tournament, will be played for the 101st time, June 15-20 at Oahu Country Club.

The tournament was first held in 1907 and it is considered the Hawaii amateur match-play championship.

The field includes defending champion Alex Ching, four-time champion Brandan Kop and past champions Kurt Nino, Ryan Perez and Kellen-Floyd Asao.

The qualifying round is June 15, with first-round matches June 16. The match-play action continues through the 36-hole championship June 20.

Taylor makes academic team

Brigham Young-Hawaii's Carlton Taylor was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII Men's Tennis Team, BYUH announced yesterday.

Taylor, a sophomore from Pleasant Grove, Utah, is a biology major with a 3.98 grade-point average. He helped the Seasiders to a 16-5 record, a Division II ranking of No. 28, and a trip to the NCAA Division II tournament.

Taylor finished the season with a 13-2 singles record and a 12-6 mark in doubles.
