Ex-police chief's son dies in crash

The son of retired Honolulu Police Chief Lee Donohue died Friday after a motorcycle crash on the Wilder Avenue off-ramp of the westbound H-1 freeway, a police spokesman said.

Steven Donohue, 43, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition after the crash and later died, police said.

Donohue lost control of the motorcycle on the right-bending turn and skidded into a wooden utility pole, at about 5:25 p.m. yesterday, police said.

Speed may have been a factor, police said. Donohue was wearing a helmet.

Officer's weapons, ammo, ID stolen

Honolulu police are still searching for suspects in the reported break-in and theft of weapons, ammunition and identification from an off-duty police officer's car.

No arrests had been made as of yesterday, Honolulu Police spokesman Maj. Frank Fujii said.

The officer's vehicle was in a parking structure in Kailua when the break-in and theft occurred Friday afternoon. The items taken from the car included the officer's handgun, a rifle, ammunition and an identification card, Fujii said.

Drug raid finds 14 ounces of meth

A Laupahoehoe woman faces 12 drug-related charges after a raid on her car and home found 14 ounces of crystal methamphetamine, 1 ounce of marijuana and 100 Hydrocodone pills, police said.

Rene Halstead, 20, is being held on $50,000 bail pending her initial court appearance tomorrow, Big Island police said in a news release.

Police said Halstead's arrest last week came after a month-long investigation involving a joint effort between the Ice Task Forces from both Hilo and Kona.

Vice officers detained Halstead in Honokaa on Wednesday and served a search warrant on her vehicle, leading to the recovery of about 4 ounces of crystal meth, or “;ice,”; police said. A subsequent search of her home resulted in the recovery of the other drugs.

Police said that throughout the investigation they seized about 19 ounces of ice valued at $121,000.

Week-old fire in Kihei finally out

A brush fire that burned for a week in Kihei is finally out, the Maui Fire Department said in a news release.

The fire began last Sunday and burned an estimated 400 acres mauka of Ohukai Road in South Kihei. The fire was reported under control Wednesday, but fire crews continued to monitor the area for hot spots.

The fire came as close as 200 yards to homes, but did not require evacuations.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
