Church continues Portuguese ritual

Descendants of Portuguese immigrants will celebrate the Feast of the Holy Ghost tomorrow in a procession and church service near Punchbowl.

Participants will leave Holy Ghost Chapel at 1774 Puowaina Drive at 8:30 a.m. They will carry decorated statues of Jesus; his mother, Mary; and other saints to Blessed Sacrament Church, 2124 Pauoa Road, for the 9 a.m. Mass.

The festival has been observed for 118 years by the Brotherhood of the Holy Ghost of the Holy Trinity at Punchbowl. Similar celebrations are held by Portuguese around the world.

The uniquely Portuguese observance of Pentecost, celebrated in Christian churches last Sunday, was started in the 14th century by Queen Isabel of Portugal.

Music galore at various isle churches

Whether your musical preference is Hawaiian, classical, sacred or show tunes, there's music in the air at Honolulu churches.

» Singers and musicians from nine congregations will perform familiar show tunes at “;A Night in Broadway”; at 7 p.m. today at the Honolulu Tabernacle, 1560 S. Beretania St. The free summer program is presented by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Honolulu Hawaii Stake orchestra and adult choir and Drill Team Hawaii.

» Hawaii's first king will be honored at a free 5 p.m. concert tomorrow at Kawaiaha'o Church, 957 Punchbowl St. Joining in “;King Kamehameha Choral Celebration: A Birthday Tribute”; will be the Kawaiaha'o Choir, Fountain Hill Community Chorus, San Tan Chorale, Kawaiolaonapukanileo Vocal Ensemble and Kamehameha Alumni Glee Club.

» Award-winning organist Aaron David Miller will perform in a 7:30 p.m. concert Friday at St. Andrew's Cathedral sponsored by the Hawaii chapter of the American Guild of Organists. The winner of awards for improvisation in competitions in the United States and Canada, he will perform music by Bach, Ibert and Dom Paul Benoit. Miller is music director at Hope Presbyterian Church in St. Paul, Minn.

» A 7 p.m. concert next Saturday at Church of the Crossroads, 1212 University Ave., will feature the 16-member Saintly Singers, whose repertoire ranges from Latin motets to Hawaiian sacred music. A $10 donation will be requested to benefit Save the FoodBasket, a nonprofit organization that provides lunches and other support for families living with HIV/AIDS. For information call 744-6377.

Jodo Shinshu Buddhism to be taught

The Hawaii Buddhist Center will present a two-week course on Jodo Shinshu Buddhism starting June 15.

Mark Unno, associate professor of East Asian Buddhism at the University of Oregon, and his father, Taitesu Unno, will teach the class, which is open to non-Buddhists as well as members of local temples. Classes at the center at 1436 University Ave. will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday nights, June 15 through 26. The cost is $10 per day.

Jodo Shinshu is a the school of Japanese Buddhism that is the foundation of the Honpa Hongwanji denomination and others in Hawaii.
