Wie bounces back with 68

After closing yesterday's opening round with back-to-back bogeys, Honolulu's Michelle Wie ralled with a 4-under 68 today at the LPGA State Farm Classic in Springfield, Ill.

Her two-day total of 6-under 138 left her in a tie for 16th. She trailed second-round leaders Suzann Pettersen and Se Ri Pak by four shots.

Kuhaulua to retire from sumo

Former Sekiwake Takamiyama, also known as Jesse Kuhaulua, will retire from the Japan Sumo Association.

Kuhaulua, who turns 65 on June 16, took the sumo world by storm in 1964 after arriving in Japan from his hometown on Maui. He has since spent 45 years wrestling and coaching and as one of the first foreigners to devote himself to sumo, has made major contributions to the internationalization of the sport.

Carey gets job at California

Former Hawaii setter Jennifer Carey was hired as Director of Volleyball Operations at California, the school announced yesterday.

In her four-year career with the Rainbow Wahine, Carey helped UH to two NCAA national semifinal appearances and a 123-12 record. She finished her career fourth all time in assists and was named to the All-WAC second team three times.

First for UH men's tennis

The Hawaii men's tennis team finished 41st in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, earning an invitation to the qualifying rounds of the 2010 ITA National Team Indoor Championships.

Teams that finish in the top 60 qualify for next year's event which begins Jan. 30 at 15 host sites.

Hawaii will be the fourth seed against top seed UCLA in the UCLA regional.

Ma makes ITA first team

BYU-Hawaii's Rong Ma was named Intercollegiate Tennis Association first team All-American yesterday on the men's side.

Jenny Chin, Yuan Jia, Wen-Lin Wang and Elwen Li of BYU-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific's Zora Vlkova were named to the women's All-American first team. Li and Jia finished third and fourth in the final women's singles while Vlkova was 15th and Chin 19th. Ma was 11th.
