Iron hot - Ad 2 Honolulu strikes another victory

Young advertising professionals from Honolulu have again taken top national honors at the American Advertising Federation's annual conference in Virginia.

Goldyn Zimetbaum and Tai Leong of Anthology Marketing Group led Ad 2 Honolulu's presentation of its pro-bono advertising campaign for nonprofit organization Kanu Hawaii - and came away with the club's sixth win since the 2000-2001 campaign for Hale Kipa, a program for at-risk youth.

That win was the first of four consecutive national presentation awards. Others were for campaigns for Aloha United Way organizations providing services to individuals with mental retardation, for Hawaii Literacy and for Hawaii Meals on Wheels.

The group's presentation for AccesSurf Hawaii in 2007 also beat other Ad 2 chapters around the nation, as did this most recent one.

Ad 2 Honolulu came in second for Club of the Year behind the Tampa Bay chapter.

The clubs submit books detailing other activities and programs for judging, and Ad 2 Honolulu won two first-place honors, for Club Operations and Programs; two second-place awards, for Membership and its Public Service book; and a third-place award, for Government Relations.

“;This year we've been really pushing forward and getting back on track,”; said Tyson Yamada, Ad 2 Honolulu president.

“;Goldyn called me. ... She's pretty happy,”; Yamada chuckled.

Kanu Hawaii is a nontraditional nonprofit organization. It encourages people to make personal commitments to make Hawaii a better place through activities such as conserving water, converting to compact fluorescent light bulbs, buying local products and more.

Television, online and radio commercials, as well as print ads for the organization, can be found on its Web site.

New FM station coming

A new radio station is due to grace the FM dial before the end of the month.

KNAN-FM 106.7 is to be erected, for now, on an existing cell tower, said Will Kemp, president of Nevada-based Kemp Communications Inc.

The company is a 49.9 percent stockholder in the joint venture building the station.

Nevada-based Big D Consulting Inc. led by president Donald Hildre, won the station in January 2006 in Federal Communications Commission FM Auction No. 62.

Big D Consulting's gross bid was just under $1.7 million during a time when FCC FM auctions appeared to be an exercise in what Alan Greenspan might have described as “;irrational exuberance.”; However, Big D's $1.7 million was a pittance compared with the $6.7 million paid by A & J Media LLC for the right to spend potentially millions more to build a radio station in Indian Wells, Calif.

Big D was granted the construction permit for the station on June 27 of that year; the partners have until the 27th of this month to get the station signed on.

“;We're still looking around for a studio site. We'll probably broadcast from the tower site for a while,”; Kemp said.

Kemp Communications owns five radio stations in Nevada and Arizona and is mum about the format with which the signal will be fired up.

It's going to stay “;a secret,”; he said, though it will not be hip-hop, given that there already are three stations locked in battle with that particular format.
