LCC to offer scholarship

A new scholarship for culinary students at Leeward Community College will be offered in the academic year 2010-11 in the name of Sunao Sandy “;Mom”; Kodama, who provided a warm, welcoming presence at her son D.K. Kodama's Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar. Sandy Kodama died last fall.

While deadlines have yet to be established, interested folks can call Malia Peters of the University of Hawaii Foundation at 956-6311.

Wine tasting to aid charity

Local charities will benefit from the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl Flavors Wine Tasting, the sixth annual event that features samplings of wine and food, entertainment and a silent auction. The event will be held 6 to 9 p.m. next Wednesday.

Past recipients include Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu and Hale Kipa.

Maui festival touts wineries

The Kapalua Wine & Food Festival returns to Maui on June 11 to 14 at the Kapalua Resort. It features some 130 wineries, 15 Maui chefs and guest chefs that include Scott Giambastiani, executive chef for Google Inc., and Robert McGrath, founding chef of Roaring Fork. There will also be seminars and a seafood fest.

Class offers tips for vegan dishes

Macrobiotic cooking instructor Leslie Ashburn will teach how to make a variety of vegan party foods, 4:30 p.m. June 11 at Toho no Hikari, 3510 Nuuanu Pali Drive.

Ashburn says many folks think healthy eating means restricted diets of brown rice, tofu and salads. But she shares simple, elegant and delicious dishes that can be shared with family and friends.

Event to showcase raw food recipes

Learn about the health benefits and appeal of raw food at a cooking demonstration, 3 p.m. Friday at Whole Foods Market in Kahala Mall.

At 11 a.m. Saturday the market offers a tour and advice on how to shop the store on a budget.

'Top Chef' spinoff stars Yamaguchi

“;Top Chef Masters,”; a spinoff of the popular “;Top Chef”; cooking competition, debuts next Wednesday with Hawaii chef Roy Yamaguchi among competitors for a $100,000 prize.

The Bravo television show will pit 24 veteran chefs in a series of fast-paced cook-offs. The last chef standing wins the cash prize for his or her chosen charity.

Guest stars and judges will include Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof, writers and producers of ABC's “;Lost.”;

The chefs will compete in groups of four, with the winner in each group competing against the others in the last six episodes. The show will air at 7, 8 and 9 p.m.

IHOP Web contest a gift for dads

Is the way to your dad's heart through his stomach? If so, forgo the tie this Father's Day and write an essay instead about what a great guy he is for IHOP's “;I HEART Dad”; online essay contest.

'Bam!' Emeril coming to Hawaii

The Kahala Hotel & Resort is readying for a visit by one of the icons of American food, Emeril Lagasse. The popular New Orleans chef is the headliner of the Kahala Food & Wine Classic on June 12 and 13.

Wine selections will come from the award-winning Schrader Cellars and Davidoff Cigars will be featured.

Catingub picked as NM conductor

The New Mexico Symphony Orchestra has hired Grammy Award winner Matt Catingub as its principal pops conductor.

Catingub, conductor for the Honolulu Symphony Pops since 1998, replaces Michael Krajewski, the principal pops conductor from 2000 to 2008.

Catingub will conduct a holiday program in December and a Frank Sinatra tribute in March. The symphony says he also will help plan pops programming in the 2010-11 season.

Catingub appeared with NMSO's Very Merry Pops holiday performance in December.

He wrote the music for the film, “;Goodnight, and Good Luck,”; a soundtrack that won the 2005 Grammy.
