Home waters a plus for Manu O Ke Kai

POSTED: Monday, June 01, 2009

For the Sanborn family, canoe paddling is more than just a recreational activity—it's their next of kin.

Twenty-five years ago, Randy Sanborn, his wife, Aloha, and their son Moku helped found the Manu O Ke Kai Canoe Club along with charter members Chuck Meade and Donna Machado. The group set up its headquarters by clearing a throng of kiawe trees near the point where the Anahulu Stream meets Waialua Bay, and has kept the organization alive for a quarter century.

In what are essentially home waters fronting Haleiwa Beach Park, Manu O Ke Kai was victorious in claiming a divisional title at its own Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a regatta yesterday. The club captured the AAA Division (25-plus crews entered) with 58 points to finish ahead of Na Keiki O Ka Mo'i (32 points). Manu O Ke Kai racked up four victories and added eight second-place finishes en route to claiming the AAA class for the second consecutive week.

“;It's been a long 25 years. We started with a small group, and every year we get bigger and bigger,”; said Randy Sanborn, president of Manu O Ke Kai. “;I've got my kids and some of my grandkids paddling. So to me, this is a family-oriented sport. You've got the father, mother, sisters and brothers ... for me, I've got three generations.”;

More than 1,500 paddlers in age divisions ranging from 12 and under to 60 and above represented 18 canoe clubs. The paddlers dealt with muggy conditions while navigating courses ranging from a quarter mile to 1 1/2 miles in yesterday's regatta.

In a departure from the traditional Keehi Lagoon layout, where races run parallel to the shore, yesterday's courses were set up perpendicular to the beach. In this course orientation, crews must rely on their steersman to not only keep them on line within the designated lane, but also navigate the surf swells that can be used to gain on opponents.

“;We know the water over here, but the way the races are going and the way the wind is blowing, it's like open ocean out there,”; said Moku Sanborn, who successfully steered Manu O Ke Kai to victories in both the men's senior and masters races. “;The bumps aren't coming straight into shore, they're coming from the side, so we had to really control the boat.

“;Our family started this club, so it's a big thing for us to go out and impress everybody. It really means a lot to me, you see my mom and dad working with the club, and I'm trying to do the same thing.”;

Kaneohe claimed the AA Division (13-24 crews entered) with a regatta-high 67 points. The club claimed its second straight victory in its class after notching seven race wins and seven runner-up finishes. The Waikiki Beach Boys won a regatta-best 10 races, and came in second (60 points), followed by Koa Kai (46 points).

“;The kids did awesome again for us,”; said Kaneohe head coach Clint Anderson about his youth program, which won all seven of the club's races, including five of the regatta's first six events. “;We're still adjusting here and there, moving paddlers around. When you come to Haleiwa, you have to deal with the people that are from there. Manu is a strong team.”;

Kaneohe's second win of the season also marks the club's second overall victory of the campaign despite its fielding fewer crews than in past seasons.

“;Close is only good in horseshoes and grenades—it don't count in races!”; said Randy Sanborn about his club's 25-year overall regatta victory drought. “;We've come within one point twice, but never won. We hope this year we'll win a race (outright).”;

Kalihi Kai captured the A Division (6-12 crews entered) with 21 points on the heels of victories in the men's and women's open-four events. Ka Mamalahoe (19 points) and Kumulokahi Elks (17 points) finished second and third in the small-club division.

Hui Wa'a will hold its third regatta of the season next Sunday at Waimanalo Beach Park. The Oahu Canoe Racing Association opens its campaign next Sunday with its annual Clement D. Pa'aina Regatta at Keehi Lagoon.
