Sculptor Sawyer's 'Voyager' to honor watermen, women
Bronze sculptor Jan-Michelle Sawyer, whose portraits of Bruddah Iz, Gabby Pahinui and Donnis Thompson honor their contributions to the Hawaii community, is working on “;Voyager,”; a bust in honor of Hawaii's watermen and women.
Sawyer is seeking community input as to where to install the sculpture. The Iz piece, originally designated for a Waikiki location, was eventually installed at the Waianae Community Center in an acknowledgment of the musician's roots.
“;The decision to place the Iz sculpture in Waianae was pono,”; she says. “;It was a fitting place to honor his spirit and to perpetuate his memory.”;
An important criterion is that the work be placed in a public venue. Share suggestions at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). See other work by Sawyer at www.Jan-MichelleSculptures.com. — Star-Bulletin
