Low to host youth hoops clinic

Professional basketball player Derrick Low will host a clinic June 13 at the 'Iolani School upper gym.

Low is a three-time Star-Bulletin state player of the year from 'Iolani who just returned after completing his first season in France.

Low will be assisted by another former state player of the year, Kyle Pape, and Low's backcourt partner at 'Iolani, Ryan Hirata. Players and coaches from the Hawaii Raiders travel team of current players will also be at the clinic.

There are two sessions, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. It is open to boys and girls 8-17.

'Swim With Mike' today at UH

Today's annual “;Swim With Mike Hawaii”; event is a full morning of water sport fun for charity at the University of Hawaii's Duku Kahanamoku swimming pool.

The event begins at 9 a.m. with a surf polo match featuring the Paumalu surf polo team. Also, NCAA championship divers will perform, and there will be a synchronized swimming demonstration.

At 10 a.m., 2008 Olympic gold medalist Rebecca Soni will host a swimming clinic.

“;Swim With Mike”; began as a fundraiser for equipment for USC swimmer Mike Nyeholt, who was paralyzed in an accident in 1981. Since then, it has raised nearly $9 million for 77 scholarships for physically challenged athletes who have overcome an accident or disease.

Hawaii-based scholarship recipients at today's event include Ann Yoshida, Joe Broc and Fulutusi Mailo.

Van Raalte wins second MPSF honor

Hawaii water polo senior Lisa van Raalte was named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation academic all-conference team yesterday.

It is the second such honor for van Raalte, who scored 33 goals while playing in all 29 matches in the just-completed season.

HPU will play UH in soccer next fall

Hawaii Pacific will play the University of Hawaii as one of its five nonconference soccer matches this season.

HPU plays UH on Aug. 30 at Waipio Peninsula Stadium, after opening the season against Westminster College on Aug. 27.

The Sea Warriors also host Hawaii-Hilo in a nonconference match Sept. 13.
