Almadova wins Gatorade award
'Iolani senior Breland Almadova was named the Gatorade Hawaii Baseball Player of the Year yesterday.
The 6-foot-2, 185-pound senior outfielder and right-handed pitcher batted .461 with nine home runs, 34 RBIs and a .921 slugging percentage. He also compiled a 2-0 record with four saves and a 0.39 ERA on the mound this season. Almadova led the Interscholastic League of Honolulu in batting average and home runs and was named the ILH Player of the Year.
Almadova has signed a letter of intent to play for Hawaii next season.
Wahine soccer schedule released
The Hawaii soccer team opens the 2009 season by hosting two NCAA tournament teams.
The team's schedule was released yesterday, with the Rainbow Wahine opening against BYU on Aug. 21 in the Ohana Hotels and Resorts No Ka Oi tournament. They then face Stanford, an NCAA tournament semifinalist, on Aug. 23.
The Wahine begin Western Athletic Conference play Oct. 2 against San Jose State.
They'll play an exhibition match against Pearl City United on Aug. 18.
Speed clinic sets summer schedule
Hawaii Speed and Quickness will begin its summer schedule the weekend of June 6 at the University of Hawaii athletic complex.
The clinics will be held on Saturdays and Sundays the weekends of June 6, June 20, June 27, July 11, July 18 and July 25.

Ching 13th in NCAA golf
San Diego freshman Alex Ching closed the NCAA men's golf championship with a 5-over-par 76 yesterday, slipping to a tie for 13th place.
The Punahou graduate completed a second-round 68 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, yesterday morning to enter the third round tied for first at 4-under.
Ching dropped back with four bogeys on the front nine and was 1 over on the back to finish the tournament at 1-over 214.
Arizona State freshman Chan Kim, a former Kaimuki standout, closed with a 1-under 70 to finish tied for 23rd.
North Carolina State's Matt Hill won the individual title at 6-under 207. Clemson junior Kyle Stanley, who matched the day's low round with a 66, was second.
