Isle sailors held in assault case

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. » Two Pearl Harbor-based sailors from a nuclear submarine are being held in lieu of $200,000 bail after their arraignment on charges of beating a man and leaving him unconscious on a Portsmouth, N.H., street.

The Portsmouth Herald reports the victim was identified in court Tuesday as 48-year-old Stephen Huntress of Kittery Point, Maine. Huntress is a former chairman of the Kittery Town Council. He suffered a fractured skull and remains hospitalized in intensive care.

Police said an officer found Huntress a few minutes before midnight Friday night. Investigators arrested 22-year-old Gerald Smith of Honolulu and 23-year-old Sandy Portobanco of Inglewood, Calif.

The crewmen from the USS Greeneville are charged with assault and witness tampering after police say they threatened a witness.

The two are scheduled to be back in court next Thursday.

 

Ski-masked man sought by police in sexual assault

A man wearing a black ski mask sexually assaulted a Moiliili woman in her home just after midnight yesterday, police said.

The suspect, a man in his mid- to late-20s, fled and is still at large.

Police said he demanded money from the 24-year-old woman after raping her.

The suspect was wearing a brown shirt and black pants and was reported to be 5-feet 2-inches to 5-feet 3-inches tall.

 

Moiliili store robbed by man carrying a gun

A masked gunman robbed a store in Moiliili at just after 9 a.m. Tuesday, police said.

The suspect, believed to be in his 30s, wore a bandana over his face when he pointed a gun at a 62-year-old man in the store and demanded money, police said.

 

Aunt reports sexual assault of 21-month-old girl

Police detectives are investigating a possible sexual assault of a 21-month-old girl in Pearl City.

The toddler's aunt reported the case at 10:45 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

A first-degree sexual assault case was opened.

No arrests had been made as of yesterday.

 

Big Island man sought in attack in Kona last year

Big Island police are looking for a 31-year-old Kona man who is believed to have sexually assaulted, threatened and choked a woman in an attack last Dec. 15.

Benjamin Acasio III is described as 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He is also wanted on an outstanding warrant.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call police at 935-3311. Anonymous calls may be made to CrimeStoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.

 

Woman accuses boyfriend of abuse back in March

Big Island police are asking for help in finding a 30-year-old man with no local address who allegedly abused his girlfriend.

Police are looking for Andrew Tale Pale, who is described as 5-foot-9, about 220 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

The girlfriend reported at 10:30 p.m. March 6 that she had been repeatedly struck by her boyfriend.

Pale left the area before officers arrived.
