Puna woman's death is classified as murder

Big Island police have classified the death of a 34-year-old Puna woman as murder.

Investigators have forwarded their findings to the county prosecutor's office, police said yesterday.

Friends reported Dawn K. Gambsky, also know as Dawn K. Mancilla, missing in July after she was not seen for at least six months.

Police, in a search last August of the Orchid Land Estates property she owned with her husband, discovered a burial site with remains later identified through dental records as Gambsky.

Police said an autopsy found Gambsky suffered traumatic injuries.

Punchbowl man arrested during burglary lookout

Police caught a 34-year-old Punchbowl man, reportedly a known burglary suspect, after an alarm system at a Hawaii Kai home went off yesterday, police said.

Plainclothes officers were conducting a surveillance of the suspect and watched him as he walked to the rear of the house, police said.

An audible alarm was tripped moments later, and the suspect fled, police said.

The officers found the man and arrested him on suspicion of first-degree burglary.

The 90-year-old homeowner returned home and said nothing was missing, police said.

Man arrested in assault on female acquaintance

Police arrested a 47-year-old Makaha man yesterday in the assault and kidnapping of a 45-year-old woman in Waianae.

Police said the two are acquaintances.

The man tied up the woman and at first refused to release her after he assaulted her, police said.

Homeless man accused in assault of bus driver

A 46-year-old homeless man was arrested in Manoa after police said he exposed himself at a bus stop and assaulted a bus driver.

Police said the incident took place at 6:15 p.m. Monday at a bus stop in Manoa.

The man then got on the bus, assaulted the bus driver and then walked away, police said.

Police found the man about 40 minutes later at 3422 Manoa Road and arrested him on suspicion of interference with operation of a public transit vehicle, a Class C felony, and open lewdness.
