Ueoka wins medalist honors
Miki Ueoka of Lihue fired a 67 at Wailua Golf Course yesterday to earn one of three spots in the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championships.
Ueoka beat Moanalua's Kristina Merkle by five strokes and three others by six shots.
Reiko Fujii beat Kellie Oride and Allisen Corpuz on the second hole of a playoff to earn the third spot in the tournament. The U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championships are scheduled for June 22-27 at Devens, Mass.
Dugas wins Kona Open by a stroke
Eric Dugas shot a 69 in the final round of the Kona Open yesterday, winning the tournament by a stroke over Jarett Hamamoto and David Saka.
Dugas earned $4,000 for the victory. Hamamoto shot a 66 yesterday to vault from 16th after the first round to second place. Saka was the low amateur and Garrett Komatsu won the A flight with a 77-81—158.
Wie crosses $300,000 mark
Michelle Wie's tie for 26th at yesterday's LPGA Corning Classic in Corning, N.Y., pushed her over the $300,000 mark in only seven tour events this season.
Wie shot a final-round 67 yesterday to finish at 13-under 275, eight shots behind winner Yani Tseng (67). Wie earned $12,666 to run her season total to $303,315, good enough for 16th on the money list.
She carded seven birdies against two bogeys for her round. For the tournament, Wie hit 28 of 56 fairways and 58 greens in regulation and needed 122 putts. She averaged 290.75 yards off the tee.
