Wie trails by 9 at Corning

Honolulu's Michelle Wie shot a 4-under 68 during yesterday's third round of the LPGA Corning Classic, but it hardly mattered.

On a day where two women shot 10-under 62s, including Mika Miyazato, who shares the 54-hole lead with Soo-Yun Kang (65) at 17-under 199, Wie needed a little more magic in her bag to get into contention.

The Stanford University sophomore enters today's final round tied for 39th with a three-day total of 8-under 208. She trails Miyazato and Kang by nine shots.

Wie carded six birdies and two bogeys. The Punahou School graduate hit seven fairways and 15 greens in regulation and needed 30 putts for her round. For the tournament, she is averaging 284.83 yards off the tee.

She is scheduled to tee off at 4:12 a.m. Hawaii time today with playing partner Se Ri Pak.

Marathon sign-up gets big turnout

The Honolulu Marathon got nearly 1,500 sign-ups at its first day of early registration yesterday at the Sports Authority in Waikele.

Hawaii residents and locally stationed military members are eligible for the $30 discount fee and 1,419 took advantage.

Registration continues there today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., which marks the end of the early walk-up period. The fee for the Dec. 13 race increases to $85 in June for Hawaii residents.

5 golfers get to U.S. Open sectionals

Mark Scheibach won the men's Kauai local qualifier tournament with a 1-under 71 at Wailua Golf Course yesterday to advance to U.S. Open Sectional play next month.

Four women also advanced to the U.S. Women's Open sectional qualifier, led by 3-under 69s from two-time state high school golf champion Kristina Merkle and Kazu Yazaki of Japan. Yuka Kuriyama of Japan and Marisa Chow of Honolulu carded 1-under 71s to also qualify.

Their sectional qualifier is on June 15 at Wailua.
