Lecture to focus on youth leadership

Church renewal and fostering young adults to be church leaders will be discussed next weekend in two lectures at Nuuanu Congregational Church.

Rodger Y. Nishioka, a professor of Christian education at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Ga., will be the guest speaker at events during the “;homecoming weekend”; at the church at 2651 Pali Highway.

Nishioka will speak at 6 p.m. Friday and at 9 a.m. Saturday. Both lectures are open to the public.

Born in Honolulu, Nishioka writes and lectures around the country about trends in youth leadership in churches.

He will also speak at the May 31 installation of the Rev. Mary Paik as senior pastor of the Nuuanu church. The 4 p.m. installation service will also feature the Rev. Charles Buck, conference minister of the Hawaii Conference, United Church of Christ, and the Rev. Wendy Tajima, San Francisco Theological Seminary associate dean of enrollment, as speakers.

 

Concerts feature glee club, Boy Choir

The music is free and the setting is serene as Oahu churches present concerts this month.

» Tomorrow, 5:30 p.m., St. Andrew's Cathedral, Queen Emma Square. The 24-member Pomona College Glee Club will perform classical choral compositions by Bach, Byrd, Messiaen, Schutz, Hindemith, Morley and Whitacre.

» Next Saturday, 7 p.m., Central Union Church, 1660 S. Beretania St. The Honolulu Boy Choir will sing Hawaiian and contemporary songs in concert. Guest entertainers will be the Sounds of Aloha Chorus and comedian Frank De Lima.
