Kauai officer injured after crashing his vehicle into wall during chase

A marked Kauai police car chasing a suspect crashed into a hollow-tile wall yesterday afternoon in Lihue.

Police said the accident occurred at 1:25 p.m. at Nawiliwili Road and Nookekula Circle.

The police vehicle was in pursuit of a suspect headed mauka on Nawiliwili Road when the suspect's vehicle turned onto Nookekula Circle. The police officer lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a hollow-tile wall, police said.

The officer suffered minor injuries. Damage to the police car was estimated at $3,000, and damage to the wall and landscaping was estimated at $3,500.

 

Fire breaks out among steel scraps at firm in Campbell Industrial Park

Firefighters helped extinguish an early morning blaze yesterday at a Campbell Industrial Park steel plant.

Fire broke out at about 2:30 a.m. among the steel scraps at Schnitzer Steel Hawaii Corp., 91-056 Hanua St., said fire Capt. Earle Kealoha.

Six fire companies doused the flames as Schnitzer employees moved the scraps. Firefighters assisted at the scene until about 8 a.m. when the fire was reported under control, Kealoha said. No one was injured.

 

Waianae man arrested in alleged sexual assaults on 14-year-old girl

Police arrested a 44-year-old Waianae man Thursday who allegedly sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl over the last 2 1/2 years.

Police said the girl reported to school officials Wednesday that she had been sexually assaulted from December 2006 to May 14, 2009.

 

Big Isle police ask for help finding woman, 65, who left car at airport

Big Island police are looking for a 65-year-old Hilo woman who has been missing since May 15.

Kyung Suk Lee was scheduled to fly to Kauai that day. Her car was found in the parking lot at the Hilo airport, but she never reached her destination.

Lee is described as 5 feet 1 inch tall, 130 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Police ask anyone who knows her whereabouts to call officer Donovan Kohara at 961-2213 or the Police Department's nonemergency line at 935-3311. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call CrimeStoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All CrimeStoppers information is kept confidential.

 

Body found on Big Island identified as man with no permanent address

Big Island police identified a body found Wednesday morning in Kealakekua as David R. Harris, who had no permanent address.

An autopsy conducted Thursday confirmed the identity, but the cause of death remained undetermined pending further tests, police said.

The autopsy showed no signs of injury or foul play, police said. The decomposing body was found Wednesday morning in bushes just north of Mamalahoa Highway at the Keekee intersection.
