UH closes in on volleyball coach

The process of finding a new Hawaii men's volleyball coach continues, with a decision on Mike Wilton's successor possibly coming within the next week.

“;That's moving along quicker (than the women's basketball search) because there were less candidates to start,”; UH athletic director Jim Donovan said.

“;But I still don't have a preset timeline or deadline. But I feel like within seven to 10 days we should have something done. That's all I'm going to say.”;

The UH athletic department is in the process of finding new head coaches for the men's volleyball and women's basketball programs.

The men's volleyball post drew 25 applicants. The school received 85 applications for the women's basketball job.

Donovan declined to comment on the list of finalists for either job or confirm a timeline to announce the new women's basketball coach.

Wilton stepped down last month and accepted a position as an assistant coach with the BYU women's program.

Among those previously mentioned as possible candidates for the men's volleyball job are Warrior associate coach Tino Reyes, UH women's assistant coach Mike Sealy, former Wahine associate and current Pacific women's coach Charlie Wade, Pepperdine men's assistant Scott Wong and UC Irvine assistant Mark Presho.

Estes and Iosefa on Rimington list

Hawaii center John Estes and Punahou graduate Trask Iosefa have been named to the spring watch list for the Rimington Trophy.

The award is annually presented to the nation's top center. Estes and Iosefa were among 44 players named to the watch list released yesterday.

Estes is entering his senior season with the Warriors and has started at center the past two seasons, earning first-team All-Western Athletic Conference honors both years. Iosefa will be a junior at San Diego State.

State Open hooks up with Turtle Bay

The Hawaii State Open golf tournament will be held at Turtle Bay Golf's Arnold Palmer and George Fazio courses after an agreement was made yesterday by the Aloha Section PGA and Turtle Bay Resort.

“;We are excited about hosting one of the Aloha Section PGA's marquee events at Turtle Bay Resort,”; said Jim Haugh, the Aloha Section PGA's executive director and CEO.

Yoshida is Fairfield's top freshman

Michelle Yoshida of Kaneohe was named Fairfield University's female freshman athlete of the year at a recent awards banquet in Trumbull, Conn.

Yoshida (Punahou '08) set 13 school records and became Fairfield's first triple champion in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference swimming championships.

She won the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles and set MAAC records in all three.

Bonk is D-III golf All-American

Pacific University's Max Bonk of Kamuela on the Big Island was one of 38 golfers to be selected to the Division III All-America team.

Bonk (Hawaii Prep '08) won all of the spring tournaments he participated in and carded two rounds of 65.

Kono helps UCLA lead NCAA golf

OWINGS MILLS, Md. » UCLA's Maria Jose Uribe shot a 6-under 66 yesterday to take a two-stroke lead in the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships and help the Bruins open a seven-shot advantage in the team competition.

Punahou graduate Stephanie Kono was second among UCLA players at 5 over.

New Mexico's Britney Choy, a Leilehua graduate, is tied for 37th at 8 over and the Waiakea grad Amanda Wilson, playing for Arizona, is tied for 48th at 9 over.

Uribe, the Colombian star who won the 2007 U.S. Women's Amateur, had a 3-under 141 total on the Caves Valley course.

UCLA topped the team standing at 13 over. Southern California was second at 20 over, followed by Denver (22 over), and Arizona State, Oklahoma State and North Carolina at 24 over.
