Batoon named St. Francis AD

Sol Batoon has been named athletic director at St. Francis School.

Batoon served as head of the school's religion department for the last five years and coached the boys intermediate basketball team last season. He was previously head coach at St. Joseph's, Damien, Kaiser and Campbell and an assistant at Chaminade and Seminole (Okla.) Junior College.

He takes over an athletic program that established an intermediate boys basketball team last year and had students play for the Pac-Five intermediate football team. The school also began offering golf and track and field for both genders and will soon add baseball. The 85-year-old school will have its first class of freshman boys next school year.

Irons advances in Tahiti

Andy Irons won his second-round heat yesterday to advance in the ASP Billabong Pro Tahiti.

Irons defeated Bede Durbidge of Australia 13.16-12.00 at Teahupo'o and will face Bobby Martinez in the third round. Hawaii's Dustin Barca lost to Adriana de Souza of Brazil 11.67-8.80.

Seasiders claim Commisioner's Cup

BYU-Hawaii won five Pacific West Conference championships to capture the 2008-09 PacWest Commisioner's Cup.

The Seasiders won titles in men's basketball, women's soccer, women's cross country, women's tennis and women's volleyball to post 52.5 points. Hawaii Pacific was second with 48.5 points followed by UH-Hilo with 47.5. Chaminade was seventh with 20.5 points.

Oda wins coach of the year honor

UH-Hilo's Kula Oda was named the west region men's Coach of the Year as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced its Division II postseason award winners.

Hawaii Pacific's Anastasia Ageychik was named the region's women's Senior Player of the Year. UH-Hilo's Eve Castaing was named Player to Watch, and BYU-Hawaii's Yuan Jia won the Rookie Player award.

The men's Senior Player honor went to HPU's Hendrik Bode. UH-Hilo's Kevin Tamura was named Player to Watch and HPU's Sebastian Bader was the top Rookie Player.

Swords sign four volleyball players

The Chaminade volleyball team announced the signing of four players expected to join the Silverswords next season.

Radford graduate Alzie Auelua will transfer to Chaminade from Western New Mexico. Also signing with the Silverswords are Crystal Powell (Word of Life), Kylee Pedro (Mid-Pacific) and Whitney Viveiros (Kamehameha).
